In 1925 A.C.M. van Amelsvoort, a shoemaker's son from Tilburg, had a most wonderful idea:he imagined people with an active, hard working lifestyle could also appreciate quality and fine detail —all they needed was someone to show them how. Driven by the clarity of his vision, the young man, who was but 21 at the time, founded Goliath. Equipped with an eye for design, a passion for detail, a mastery of traditional skills and a deep understanding of the character of materials, van Amelsvoort began crafting shoes for professionals. The original Goliath clientele were footballers in the Dutch professional and amateur leagues. Later on, however, ice-skaters, cricketers, gentlemen and workers all slipped their feet into Goliath shoes before going about their business. By the 1940s, Goliath had established itself as a manufacturer of world class sporting shoes, which it continued to produce during the 50s and 60s. However, things do change and as the Netherlands slowly shifted from a manufacturing to service-based economy, Goliath fell on hard times. By the end of the 60s, Goliath had quietly vanished from the sporting landscape. Circumstances can be cruel and survival does not always depend on the excellence of one's product, one's integrity or work ethic. However, when these qualities are present in a brand, more often than not, that brand does not die; it simply enters a long period of 'hibernation'. In 2006, Goliath awoke from a deep sleep and today, Goliath represents the very best in premium sportswear style. Every shoe we make remains true to our original vision and sporting heritage.
